Whenever you start to become unhappy with a job it’s important that you don’t quit immediately with no back-up plan. However, at the same time it’s also important that you don’t make yourself suffer. After all, you are in charge of your career. YOU have the power to stop working at that miserable company and even more, you have the power to do something that makes you happy. Always remember that you are in charge of your job and your career.
At one time (years ago) it was ideal that an employee would get into a major company and the buld their career there. Things have changed, though. This no longer seems to be the case. Before you would climb the ladder and eventually make your way to the top with some fancy title, large responsibilities and accompanying benefits that result.
But that picture has changed drastically. It’s unrealistic to create a long-term strategy to work your way up in a company in this day and age. There are constantly changes throughout the company that directly affect where your job position fits in (if it even belongs there anymore).
People need to realize that they are in control of their careers, and you can’t simply sit around, going through the motions, waiting for your name to be called so you can start working your way up the corporate ladder. In fact, perhaps you should avoid working for that corporate office altogether. Find a job that makes you happy where you are, so you aren’t disappointed and “stuck” when you find that getting promoted isn’t as easy as you thought it’d be.
Next, you want to avoid being that very hard worker who hides behind their desk and keeps to themselves. It’s important to build relationships, be personable, and still have excellent work skills. If you’re the one keeping your head down then when your company decides to sell-out you might be the first one without a job. You need relationships with bosses, co-workers and executives to prove that you have both the professional skills and the work skills to continue on with the company no matter which direction they choose to go one day.
It’s also important that you stay in “shape” with your career. You don’t want to wake up one day and realize you really don’t understand your company, your job or the growth taking place in the company. You don’t want to find yourself stuck in the same motions- it’s important that you constantly challenge yourself and find things to help engage you through work.
Don’t get left behind at any point. If your job changed tomorrow, would you? Get your mind where it needs to be, know that you’re in control and be prepared to make your future appreciate you.
