There are always those employees that seem to annoy everyone. And trust us, if you find them annoying you’re probably not the only one. There are certain types of employees that bosses really hate. But don’t worry; if for some reason you find yourself dealing with people like this we have some advice on how to handle the situation.
1. Whiners. This is the employee you’ll find griping that something isn’t fair all the time, and then they have to let everyone know about it. The solution: First give them a warning letting him/her know that you don’t want to hear negative things about coworkers, your salary or what is unfair any more. If this doesn’t work, then you know the next processes (write up, final warning, see ya!)
2. Needy. This is the employee who’s always looking for the positive responses, and don’t you dare criticize them (or they might cry). This is the one who expects a promotion immediately and still expects gold stars and pats on the head for simply showing up. The solution: This type of behavior may require a sit down meeting. There need to be notes taken and understanding between everyone. This needy employee needs to know that she/he will only be given positive feedback when they do something exceptional- not for simply showing up to work on time and doing your assigned duties correctly.
3. Time Waster. This is the employee who doesn’t respect anyone’s time. They shows up late to work and leaves as early as he can. They usually do great work, but they have no respect for time. The solution: Some people just don’t do well with time and others are just rude. You need to figure out which category this problemed employee falls under. If there is no sense of time let them be punished and possibly fired for being late; as for meetings have someone pick them up on their way to the meeting. But if they’re just plain rude then stop playing those games and let her/him know their time will end more quickly than they believe if the bad habits do not somehow fix themselves.
4. Slacker. This is the person who never gets anything done, always has excuses for missing deadlines, pushes their work onto the coworker and is basically the huge drag for the company to have. The solution: Fire the slacker. Give them one warning first, letting them know they aren’t performing well or acceptably for the company’s standards and that if they do not change their ways they will be out of a job. Using a 60-day performance improvement plan with clear benchmarks and goals.
5. Know it All. Don’t get us wrong, having an intelligent employee who has a brain full of knowledge isn’t an issue. The problem lies when you have an employee that feels it necessary to constantly speak up on issues they know nothing of, or have no real insight for. It’s frustrating, irritating and annoying to nearly everyone. The solution: Speak with this employee and inform them that they don’t always have to be the know it all or one-upper. Simply hanging back for a conversation that they don’t know about is acceptable.
Of course there are many other types of employees that bosses maybe don’t like as well. But this will cover the most obvious and obnoxious and hopefully help keep them out of your company or as a boss you can help change their ways.
